As adults, it’s our responsibility to make sure children grow up believing they can achieve their dreams if they work hard enough. But negative stereotypes and unconscious biases can have an effect on kids. One firmly established and very harmful stereotype claims that boys are much better than girls at math and science. Unfortunately, girls seem to pick up on this belief and react to it with anxiety. High anxiety is known to negatively affect performance on a number of tasks, so this may be hurting girls’ math scores more than anything.
