Are Psychiatrists ‘Over-Diagnosing’ Anxiety Disorders?

Anxiety disorders are often debilitating and can be difficult to overcome. Fortunately, new methods of treatment are being explored all the time. This is in part due to the increasing prevalence of anxiety problems in the general population. A positive effect of the rising number of people being diagnosed with anxiety disorders is that these people are seeking the help they need from professionals to deal with their stress. On the other hand, the argument against labeling healthy, adaptive behaviors as disorders continues. Some say that anxiety is perfectly natural and even beneficial to survival, so the diagnosis is usually unnecessary.  Others state that anxiety disorders are real, but propose to change the standards for labeling someone with one.
